Info Ancient dwelling on the Pelusiac branch of the Nile that served as capital during various periods of Egyptian history.
Avaris was later incorporated as the southern quarter into the city of Pi-Ramesse.
The name (also spelled Auaris) originates from Egyptian Hatwaret, specifying an administrative capital (cf. Hawara at the entrance to the Faiyum).
Avaris is the city where in the times of the Middle Kingdom the main settlements of the Habiru in Egypt were situated (the biblical Goshen).
It should be noted that many (older) works erroneously identify Avaris with Tanis.
The place where Avaris was unearthed is today called Tell ed-Daba.
